Appendicitis is an extremely painful and potentially life threatening condition that affects tens of thousands of people across the UK every year.
A quick diagnosis and treatment needs to be made before the appendix, swollen and inflamed with pus bursts. If the appendix ruptures before it can be removed the pus held in the appendix leaks into the body and can cause blood poisoning and other complications.
Whilst appendicitis is a common problem it can be difficult to diagnose and doctors do on occasion fail to make the correct diagnosis, confusing the symptoms with those of a bladder, or urine infection, or gastroenteritis.
Therefore the medical negligence claims relating to appendicitis we see are usually due to a misdiagnosis of the condition.
Symptoms of appendicitis can include:
- Abdominal pain – this usually starts as a dull pain near the navel or the upper abdomen that then becomes sharp as it moves to the lower right abdomen
- Nausea and/or vomiting soon after abdominal pain begins
- Loss of appetite
- High temperatures
- Abdominal swelling
- Fever
- Inability to pass gas
If you think that you or a family member may have suffered an injury as a result of a delay in the diagnosis of appendicitis then you may be entitled to compensation.
